Welcome Ideas

For first few weeks...

1) Go round saying your name and course/work but each person has to remember and repeat what the others before have said before they can say their own. (Means everyone really listens to what has been said!)
2) Silly games e.g. identifying foods by taste, identifying objects by feel etc
3) Get people into pairs and give them 2 minutes to tell each other a brief life history then pull everyone back together and go round as everyone has to relay to the group all they can remember about the other person.

After first few weeks...
4) What first comes into your mind when you think about God? 15) What has been an example of answered prayer in your own life?
5) What has the last week been like?-best and worst of it 16) If you could repeat your life so far, what things would you change?
6) How are you doing? - anything you're struggling with/encouraged by? 17) If you had one hour with the prime minister, what questions would you ask and what advice would you offer?
7) What has been the best/worst time in your life so far? 18) If you had an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
8) What is your biggest achievement? 19) What do you do when someone says or does something that hurts you?
9) What sort of people do you get on with best? 20) What sort of impression do you feel you give to others?
10) What has been your greatest disappointment? 21) What do you like the least and the most about yourself?
11) What has been the best present anyone has got you and why? 22) What has been the most significant time of growth in your Christian life so far?
12) What do you most enjoy doing on a day off/in your spare time? 23) Describe what your perfect day would be like...
13) What is your favourite time of the day/season of the year? 24) What are your goals for the year ahead?
14) When did you last get angry and how did you deal with it? 25) One pet niggle I have is...

Tips:

  • Start by answering yourself to give the others chance to think about their response.

  • Watch out for an unexpected crisis or emotional response triggered by the question. Minister to them there and then, get people next to them to lay hands and pray in God's comfort etc.

  • Once the group has been going a few weeks vary the ice-breaker by getting everyone to write down their answer before putting them in a box. Mix them up and try to guess who wrote what.
