Cell Group Application Questions

The phrase “tools not trophies” is a phrase I have used before. If we talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit or being a renewed or Charismatic church, does that mean we need to be dependent upon the Holy Spirit for empowerment and resourcing in our daily lives?

What is the function of the Holy Spirit?

Eph 4: 12  to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What is the work of the Spirit?

Gen. 1:2  Gen. 2:7

Lk. 3: 22 Ch. 4: 1, 14, 18,  Jn. 16: 7 - 11

Who promises the Spirit?

Lk. 24: 49 Acts 1: 4

Who gives the Spirit?

Acts 2: 32 - 33

Who can receive the Spirit?

Acts 2: 38 - 39  (Acts 2: 17 - 20)

Joel 2: 28 - 32

What do we understand the purpose of the Spirit to be?

Phil. 3: 3, Acts 1:8 Jn 15: 26 - 27 Jn 16: 14 Acts 13: 52 Ro. 8: 1 - 2 Eph.  2: 18 1Cor. 12: 1 - 11

Can we be filled with the Spirit?

Ro. 8: 11 Eph. 1: 13 - 14, ch. 4: 30

There are 21 gifts listed in the three lists of gifts give to the church.  There are other gifts and ministries to be found throughout the Bible e.g. Ex 31: 1 – 6.

It might be helpful to think of the gifts in three kinds of categories or giftings that compliment each other. The gifts are not static, in other words gifts or giftings might be given from any or more than one of the categories e.g. you might be a discerning hospitable prophet. Gifts are not always given for life but are functional. They are for a purpose or a ministry.

Holy Spirit: three kinds of gifting:

1.            Communication: ……………………….

          Teaching, prophecy, tongues, interpretation, wisdom

2.            Change (by intervention):…………….

Knowledge, discernment, faith, leadership, service, healing, miracles

3.         Connection:                        Lego bricks …………….

          Pastoring, hospitality, administration, mercy, encouragement.

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit ?

The Holy Spirit is available to every Christian:                            Acts 2; 38 –39, 5;32

                                                                                                                  Joel 2; 28 – 32

We are to:

Receive Him                                                                                          Acts 19: 2

Desire Him                                                                                             Jn 7: 37 – 39

Believe God                                                                                           Gal 3: 4

Ask for Him                                                                                            Lk 11: 13

Laying on of hands is not essential but can be helpful            Acts 8: 17, 9: 17

Jesus was anointed by the Spirit for his ministry                       Lk 4:1 ff,  Acts 10: 38

You might want to spend some time waiting on God and praying for each other that you are refilled (We are like sieves - we leak!! So we need to be refilled day by day) 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Greek is ‘be continually filled’

Then you might like to wait and pray that our Father in heaven may release his love gifts on you in cell.

How do we do this?

Eagerly desire 1 Cor 14; 1

Ask God

Co-operate with the spirit

Believe

Persevere

What are some of the common hindrances?

Lk 11: 9 – 13

Barriers                       doubt                                                                 Lk 11 9 – 10

                                      fear                                                                     Lk 11: 11 – 13

                                      inadequacy                                                      Lk 11: 13
