Faith that moves mountains
For Mark faith is intricately linked with risk – faith’s call is to be risk takers. The cursing of the fig tree and the overturning of the money changers’ tables in the court of the gentiles should be seen as part of the mountain mover episode. It can be see as part of the end and the fulfilment of the old covenant and the dawn of the new. The following passages from Isa are often called ‘the mountain passages’ which present the coming of the messiah and the dawning of salvation. Isa
40:3 Listen! It's the voice of someone
shouting, "Clear the way through the wilderness for the LORD! Make a
straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Isa
40:4 Fill in the valleys, and level
the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough
places. Isa
40:5 Then the glory of the LORD will
be revealed, and all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken!" Isa
45:2 This is what the LORD says:
"I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains. I will smash down
gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. Isa
45:3 And I will give you treasures
hidden in the darkness—secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I
am the LORD, the God of Israel, the One who calls you by name. Isa
49:11 And I will make My mountains
into level paths for them. The highways will be raised above the valleys. Isa
49:12 See, My people will return from
far away, from lands to the north and west, and from as far south as Faith moves mountains. Think about the mountains in your life that you need to face. They might not be good, you might not be proud of them, and they may be the issue that prevents God from being God in your life. However they also may be the achievements you have made - the success story. Take the opportunity to think and pray. How can we help each other bring our mountains honestly before God? What are the issues in our lives that prevent us being
100% committed to extending the One of the mountains Jesus faced was faced on the Mar
14:32 They went to the olive grove
called Mar
14:33 He took Peter, James, and John
with Him, and He became deeply troubled and distressed. Mar
14:34 He told them, "My soul is
crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with
Me." Mar
14:35 He went on a little farther and
fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour
awaiting Him might pass Him by. Mar
14:36 "Abba, Father," He
cried out, "everything is possible for You. Please take this cup of
suffering away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine." Mar
14:37 Then He returned and found the
disciples asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Couldn't you
watch with Me even one hour? Mar
14:38 Keep watch and pray, so that you
will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is
weak." Mar
14:39 Then Jesus left them again and
prayed the same prayer as before. Mar
14:40 When He returned to them again,
He found them sleeping, for they couldn't keep their eyes open. And they
didn't know what to say. Mar
14:41 When He returned to them the
third time, He said, "Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the
time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Mar
14:42 Up, let's be going. Look, My
betrayer is here!" |
