Issues of Justice

Christians worship a God who is just and who expects his followers to also uphold justice and to speak out on behalf of the oppressed. If you want to read more about the Biblical basis for getting involved in issues relating to justice we suggest that you visit the Speak web site.

As mentioned on the Persecution of Christians page on this web site, All Saints church has a special interest in supporting persecuted Christians. We have also been involved in wider issues of justice in the world. A number of us have been involved in the Jubilee 2000 and the more recent Make Poverty History campaigns to promote debt relief, fair trade and more and better aid for some of the poorest countries in the world. Without such changes they have no chance of ever developing to improve the lot of the majority of their populations. We publicise (in the Church) what is going on in the field of debt relief and trade justice around the world. You can also get information on this from the Make Poverty History web site.

A good web site to visit for a number of justice issues addressed from a Christian viewpoint is Jubilee Campaigns and the associated charity Jubilee Action. These organisations are totally separate from Jubilee 2000+. Jubilee Campaigns has, for some time, been campaigning for protection of children around the world. This includes street children, children who are being sexually exploited and children who are in prison.

We have followed a number of the Christian Aid (CA) campaigns. CA were very involved in the Jubilee 2000 campaign and are still involved in the Jubilee+ and Make Poverty History campaigns. Find out more from the World Mission notice board in the church hall.

Playing Your Part

There are many practical ways you can get involved in these and other justice campaigns. One way is to get information that will help you understand the issues better. This in turn will enable you to write short letters to relevant politicians and others to bring pressure to bear for beneficial changes. Many groups offer you useful help in phrasing your letters. One such group is Justice Mail more details of which can be found here.

Why not directly help producers in developing countries by increasing your consumption of fairly traded foods? We have a stall selling fairly traded products in the church hall after most Sunday morning services. Look out for the increasing range now being sold in supermarkets or visit the Good News Centre (47 Churchgate) or Oxfam shop(22 Market Street) in Loughborough, where fairly traded foods and crafts are available. You can get also get fairly traded foods and handicrafts by mail order from Traidcraft. Their site also contains a lot of background information on fair trade issues. Traidcraft have large fair trade web store at http://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk.
This site is a good place for bulk purchase of foodstuffs as well as somewhere to purchase lovely handicraft gifts.
